چکیده

This paper analyzes multi-sender cheap talk when the state space might be restricted, either because the policy space is restricted, or the set of rationalizable policies of the receiver is not the whole space. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a fully revealing perfect Bayesian equilibrium for any state space. We show that if biases are large enough and are not of similar directions, where the notion of similarity depends on the shape of the state space, then there is no fully revealing perfect Bayesian equilibrium. The results suggest that boundedness, as opposed to dimensionality, of the state space plays an important role in determining the qualitative implications of a cheap talk model. We also investigate equilibria that satisfy a robustness property, diagonal continuity. ∗We would like to thank Drew Fudenberg for comments and suggestions, Jeffrey Ely and three anonymous referees for suggestions, seminar participants at Harvard-MIT, UPenn, UC Berkeley, UChicago, the 2006 North American Meeting of the Econometric Society, the 2006 European Meeting of the Econometric Society, and the 18th International Conference on Game Theory at Stony Brook for comments, and Niels Joaquin for valuable research assistance. †Department of Economics, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138

Multi-sender cheap talk with restricted state space∗

This paper analyzes multi-sender cheap talk in multidimensional environments. Battaglini (2002) shows that if the state space is a multidimensional Euclidean space, then generically there exists a fully revealing equilibrium. We show that if the state space is restricted, either because the policy space is restricted or the set of rationalizable policies of the receiver is not the whole space, ...

Robust almost fully revealing equilibria in multi-sender cheap talk∗

This paper shows that in multi-sender cheap talk games, if the state space is large enough, then there exist equilibria arbitrarily close to full revelation of the state that are robust to introducing a small amount of noise in the senders’ observations. The result holds irrespectively of the dimensionality of the state space, including for one-dimensional state spaces. We establish the result ...

The (non-)robustness of influential cheap talk equilibria

Chakraborty and Harbaugh (2010) prove the existence of influential cheap talk equilibria in one sender one receiver games when the state is multidimensional and the preferences of the sender are state-independent. We show that only the babbling equilibrium survives the introduction of any small degree of uncertainty about the sender’s preferences in the spirit of Harsanyi (1973). None of the in...

Ordinal cheap talk∗

Can comparative statements be credible even when absolute statements are not? For instance, can a professor credibly rank different students for a prospective employer even if she has an incentive to exaggerate the merits of each student? Or can an analyst credibly rank different stocks even if the client would be dubious about a recommendation to buy any one of them? We examine such problems i...
